There are hundreds of AI tools now. But almost all of them are one of three kinds.

🐾 · · · 🐾

1 · Chat assistants

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot. Back and forth, like a conversation. Best for writing, explaining and planning.

“What kind of AI tool are you? A chat assistant, a search tool that shows its sources, or a helper built into another app? Tell me plainly what you’re best at, and when I should use something else.”

2 · Answer tools that show their sources

Perplexity is the best known, and some chat assistants do this when web search is on. Best for anything current. Then click a source and check it yourself.

“Answer this question and list the websites you used, with links, so I can check them myself: [your question]”

3 · Built in helpers

Inside your email, phone, messages and documents, usually a sparkle or star button. Best for quick jobs where you already are.

“Summarize this in three short bullet points, and tell me if I need to do anything, and by when. [paste an email or message, with names and personal details removed]”

🐾 · · · 🐾

Which do you actually need? Most people only need one chat assistant, plus the habit of checking sources.
