Phase II Week 1 — what email taught me about every other problem 🐾
The reply that reframed everything. What email exhaustion has in common with nine other topics. And what's coming next week — the one I've been most nervous to tackle.
Saturday morning. First week of Phase II. Coffee is hot and I want to share something that surprised me.

What worked
✅ The reply that reframed everything
Susan in Georgia — “twelve minutes on the phone versus what might have been weeks of email damage.” That reply didn’t just illustrate the right-channel decision prompt. It illustrated something I’ve been thinking about all week: the biggest cost of the problems Phase II addresses isn’t the time. It’s what the time costs you. Hours lost to email aren’t just hours — they’re hours taken from the relationships, the creative work, the learning, and the rest that Phase I was all about. Phase II is about protecting Phase I. That’s the frame I’ll carry into the next nine weeks.
✅ The component that surprised everyone most
The Response Library. I expected the Tone Check to generate the most response — it’s the most dramatic. But the Response Library was the one that people immediately said “I never thought of that.” Building your five most common email responses in your own voice once and pulling from them forever. It’s simple. It’s obvious in retrospect. Nobody has suggested it to them before. That gap is why Phase II exists.

What I’d do differently
💭 One honest change
I’d spend more time in the Sunday video on the emotional weight of email — not just the hours but the mental rent it charges even when you’re not at your computer. Several replies named that specifically and I touched on it but didn’t fully honor it. The exhaustion of email isn’t really about email. It’s about carrying unfinished things. AI doesn’t just speed up the finishing — it reduces the carrying. That distinction matters and I’ll make it more explicitly next time.

What’s coming next week
🔭 Week 10 · July 13–19
This is the one I’ve been most nervous to tackle — and the one I think matters most.
Week 10 is about retirement identity. The transition nobody fully prepares you for. Not the finances — the self. Who you are when the title is gone. What structure means when there isn’t one anymore. Where purpose comes from when it used to come from your work.
This is deeply personal territory and I’m going to go into it honestly. AI isn’t going to solve the identity question — but it can be a remarkable thinking partner for navigating it. And a lot of you are in the middle of this right now.
Sunday: How I used AI to figure out who I was after I stopped being what I did
Tuesday: The Purpose Mapping Method — using AI to rediscover what matters to you now
Thursday: Building your Second Chapter AI Practice — a complete framework for the transition
If you know someone navigating this — newly retired, approaching retirement, or simply feeling the loss of identity that comes with major life transitions — share the channel with them. Next week is exactly for them.
Phase II is underway. Thank you for being here. 🐾
