The 3 ChatGPT Questions I Use When I Feel Stuck
These simple questions help turn vague overthinking into clearer decision-making.
When I feel stuck on a decision, I do not start by asking ChatGPT:
“What should I do?”
That question sounds simple, but it usually gives a generic answer.
And generic answers are not very helpful when you are trying to make a real-life decision.
Instead, I ask three better questions.
These questions help me slow down, look at the decision more honestly, and avoid making a choice based on stress, pressure, or impulse.
Question 1: What am I not considering?
This is one of my favorite questions because it helps me get out of my own head.
When we are close to a decision, we usually focus on what we already believe.
We think about what we want.
What we are afraid of.
What feels urgent.
What we hope will happen.
But sometimes the missing piece is the thing we are not looking at.
So I like to ask ChatGPT:
“Here is the decision I am trying to make. What am I not considering?”
That question can reveal blind spots.
Maybe you forgot about timing.
Maybe you forgot about cost.
Maybe you forgot about energy.
Maybe you forgot about whether the decision actually supports your bigger goal.
That one question can keep you from rushing into something that looks good on the surface but creates more work later.
Question 2: What are the tradeoffs?
Every decision has a tradeoff.
Even a good decision costs something.
It may cost time.
It may cost money.
It may cost focus.
It may cost energy.
It may delay something else.
So I like to ask:
“What are the tradeoffs between these options?”
This helps me stop looking for the perfect answer.
Because most decisions are not perfect.
They are practical.
The better question is not always:
“Which option is perfect?”
It is:
“Which option fits my real life right now?”
That is where ChatGPT can be helpful.
It can help compare the options in a calmer way.
Question 3: What is the simplest next step?
This one matters because decision-making can quickly turn into overthinking.
You ask one question, and suddenly you have a 25-step plan.
That is not always helpful.
So after ChatGPT helps compare the options, I ask:
“What is the simplest next step I can take today?”
Not the biggest step.
Not the perfect step.
The simplest step.
Sometimes the next step is sending one message.
Sometimes it is waiting 24 hours.
Sometimes it is checking the price.
Sometimes it is writing down the pros and cons.
Sometimes it is saying no.
A decision does not always need a dramatic action.
Sometimes it just needs the next honest step.
Copy and Paste Prompt
Try this:
“Help me think through this decision.
The decision is: [insert decision].
My options are: [insert options].
Please answer these three questions:
What am I not considering?
What are the tradeoffs?
What is the simplest next step I can take today?”
Simple. Practical. Easy to use.
And that is the point.
ChatGPT should not decide for you.
It should help you think more clearly so you can decide for yourself.
