👉Tuesday Mini Lesson: The Difficult Conversation Method: 3 AI Steps for Saying What Needs to Be Said
Most difficult conversations don’t fail because the people involved don’t want to have them. They fail because nobody knows how to start. Today’s method takes you from “I don’t know how to begin” to “I know what I want to say and I’m ready enough to say it.”
🐾 · · · 🐾
📌 Step 1 — Clarity: Know What You Actually Want
“I need to have a difficult conversation with [person] about [topic]. Before I think about what to say, I need to get clear on what I actually want from this conversation. Please help me by asking one question at a time about: what outcome would make me feel this conversation was worth having, what I’m afraid of wanting that I haven’t admitted to myself, whether I want to be heard, understood, forgiven, or for something to change, whether this is a conversation I need the other person to participate in or something I need to say regardless of how they respond, and what I would consider a good-enough outcome if a perfect outcome isn’t available. When done, summarize what came through in my answers.”
The most important step — and the most skipped. Know what you want before you think about what to say.
📌 Step 2 — Their Reality: Walk in With Understanding Already Built In
“I am preparing for a difficult conversation with [person] about [topic]. I’ve clarified what I want. Now I need to prepare for their reality. Please help me: (1) Think through how this topic is likely to feel from their perspective — what they might be afraid of, what old wounds it might touch, why they might have avoided it too, (2) Anticipate the three most likely reactions and help me think about how to respond in a way that keeps the conversation open, (3) Think about what they might need from this conversation that they haven’t said, (4) Identify the thing I might say that is most likely to derail the conversation, (5) Tell me one thing about their perspective I should hold onto when the conversation gets hard.”
Conversations that go well are usually ones where both people feel the other understood it was complicated for them too.
📌 Step 3 — The Opening: Start Without Starting a Fight
“I am ready to have a difficult conversation with [person] about [topic]. I know what I want and I’ve prepared for their perspective. Now I need the opening. Please help me: (1) Write three possible openings — one direct, one softer, one that starts with a question — and tell me what each signals to the other person, (2) Tell me which opening is most likely to result in a real conversation based on what I’ve told you, (3) Tell me what to say if they immediately get defensive or shut down, (4) Give me one sentence I can use if the conversation goes sideways and I need to bring it back, (5) Tell me what to do if they’re not ready to have this conversation today — how to leave it open without losing the momentum I’ve built.”
The right opening tells them this matters to you, signals you’re coming with care not aggression, and invites them in rather than putting them on the defensive.
