The Output Contract Prompt (My 30 Second Fix for Rambling ChatGPT)
If ChatGPT keeps giving you a whole essay when you asked for a simple email or a clean table, nothing is wrong with you. Your prompt is missing one thing.
A format contract.
I call it my Output Contract, and it’s the fastest way I know to make ChatGPT behave like a helpful assistant instead of a talkative brainstorm buddy.
🎥 Watch the Tuesday Mini Lesson here:
Why this works
Most people tell ChatGPT what they want, but they don’t tell it how to deliver it.
So ChatGPT fills the gaps with extra ideas, extra paragraphs, extra options, extra everything.
The Output Contract fixes that by giving the AI four rails to stay on:
✅ Job (what you want done)
✅ Format (exact structure)
✅ Rules (tone, length, must include, must avoid)
✅ Check (ask questions before writing if details are missing)
It’s simple. It’s reusable. And it saves time every single week.
Copy + Paste: The Output Contract Template
Use this at the top of your prompts, then paste your messy context under it.
OUTPUT CONTRACT
1) Job: [what you want done]
2) Audience: [who it is for]
3) Format: [exact structure: bullets, table, CSV, headings, subject line + body, etc.]
4) Rules:
- Tone: [friendly, firm, confident, warm, etc.]
- Length: [limit]
- Must include: [key points]
- Must avoid: [no fluff, no emojis, no repetition, etc.]
5) Check: If any detail is missing, ask me up to 3 questions BEFORE you write.
TASK DETAILS
[paste your messy context here]Use Case 1: Friendly + Firm Emails
When you want an email you can actually send without rewriting, add this:
Output only.
Return: Subject line + email body.
Max length: 120 words.
Tone: friendly, confident, clear.
Must include: [your key points]
Must avoid: fluff, over explaining, extra alternatives.
If anything is missing, ask me up to 3 questions before writing.Use Case 2: Canva Bulk Create Tables
If you need copy paste tables for Canva bulk creation, this line matters more than people realize:
Return ONLY the table. No intro. No notes. No explanation.
Use this delimiter: TAB (or CSV commas).
Do not use extra blank lines. That one rule prevents the “helpful” paragraphs that break your formatting.
Your tiny challenge for this week
Use the Output Contract twice:
One email
One table
Then notice how much less time you spend cleaning up the output.
💬 If you want me to pin a ready to copy version of the template, comment: CONTRACT
