Why ChatGPT Gives Vague Answers (and How to Fix It in One Line)
A simple communication fix that instantly improves AI output
If ChatGPT has ever given you an answer that feels bland, generic, or “meh,” it’s usually not because the tool is broken.
It’s because your prompt didn’t give it enough to work with.
Here’s the quick truth: vague input creates vague output.
This isn’t an AI problem. It’s a communication problem.
The most common vague prompt
“Write a caption about healthy eating.”
ChatGPT has no idea:
who this is for
what your tone should be
what you want the reader to do
how long it should be
what you want to avoid
So it guesses. And guesses tend to sound generic.
The one line fix
Add this line to almost any prompt:
“Ask me up to 3 questions before you answer.”
That’s it.
Example (copy/paste)
Prompt:
Write an Instagram caption about healthy eating.
Ask me up to 3 questions before you answer.
Why this works
Now ChatGPT is forced to slow down and get clarity first, like a good assistant would.
Want the “AI Puppy” version of this rule?
When the AI Puppy is confused, you don’t keep yelling new commands.
You give it a simple job:
“Ask me questions so you can do this right.”
Try it today
Pick one thing you were going to ask ChatGPT this week and add the one line fix.
Then notice how much better the output gets.
