A word about Contribution Design
This is the component I’d most want someone to sit with. Because the thing retirement removes — the built-in answer to “what do I contribute?” — is not something most people know they’ll miss until it’s gone.
Margaret, from Wednesday’s post, named it precisely: she wasn’t grieving her job. She was grieving being needed. Contribution Design helps you find where you can be genuinely needed again — not in the same form, but with the same depth. That’s what makes it worth doing carefully.
📌 Contribution Design Prompt
“Help me design what I contribute in this chapter. Ask me about: what problems genuinely move me to want to help, who specifically I want to contribute to, what I have to genuinely offer (knowledge / time / presence / skills / experience), and what form would feel most natural — teaching, mentoring, creating, supporting, organizing. I want a contribution that feels like a genuine expression of who I am now, not a second career or an obligation.”
A word about the Quarterly Check-In
This is the component that makes the whole practice sustainable over years rather than seasons. Because the second chapter is not a destination. It’s a practice. And like any practice, it needs tending.
Set a calendar reminder — first week of October, January, April, July. Thirty minutes with AI. One honest conversation about how the chapter is actually going. Not how it’s supposed to be going. How it is.
📌 Quarterly Check-In Prompt
“Time for my quarterly second chapter check-in. Ask me honestly — one question at a time — about: whether my purpose still feels genuine, whether my daily architecture is serving me, whether my contribution feels meaningful, whether I feel genuinely connected, and what I’ve learned about myself in the past three months. Help me be honest with myself. The goal is not to have the right answers — it’s to know what’s actually true.”
🎬 Watch today’s Thursday Lecture: The full walk-through of all five components. The Quarterly Check-In scene carries the most important line of the lecture — “The second chapter is not a destination. It’s a practice.” Delivered with full conviction.

Thursday’s Video Prompts:
📌 Component 1 — Identity Inventory
"Help me build a complete Identity Inventory — a portrait of who I am not defined by my professional history. Ask me one at a time about: my core values and what I stand for, my genuine strengths as ways of engaging with the world, the roles I've played beyond work, what I know deeply that has nothing to do with career, and how I want to be remembered by those who know me best."
📌 Component 2 — Contribution Design
"Help me design what I contribute in this chapter. Ask about: what problems genuinely move me to want to help, who specifically I want to contribute to, what I have to genuinely offer now, and what form of contribution would feel most natural — teaching, mentoring, creating, supporting, organizing. I want a contribution that feels like a genuine expression of who I am, not a second career."
📌 Component 3 — Daily Architecture
"Help me design a weekly architecture for retirement. Here's what I know about my energy and contribution: [share]. Create a weekly shape that protects time for my contribution, includes daily anchors, makes space for wellbeing, connection, creativity, and learning — and doesn't over-schedule me. I want a rhythm sustainable for years."
📌 Component 4 — Community Compass
"Help me think through community in this chapter. Ask about: what I valued most about the community my work provided, what kind of connection I genuinely need now, where that community might exist in my current life, and one specific step I could take this week to begin moving toward it."
📌 Component 5 — Quarterly Check-In
"Time for my quarterly second chapter check-in. Ask me honestly — one question at a time — about: whether my purpose still feels genuine, whether my daily architecture is still serving me, whether my contribution feels meaningful, whether I feel genuinely connected, and what I've learned about myself in the past three months."
