The Travel Planning Method
Three steps that take any trip from idea to itinerary — for any destination, any traveler, any budget.
📌 Step 1 — Clarify: What Kind of Trip Do You Actually Want?
“I want to plan a trip and I need help clarifying exactly what kind of trip I’m looking for before I start researching. Please interview me by asking one question at a time about: what I’m hoping to feel during this trip — rested, adventurous, cultured, connected, or something else, the pace I want — slow and relaxed versus packed with experiences, how long I want to be away and how far I want to travel, what I absolutely don’t want — crowds, excessive walking, long drives, expensive restaurants, anything else, who I’m traveling with and what their needs or preferences are, and my approximate budget range. When we’ve finished, summarize the ideal trip profile in one paragraph that I can use as the basis for all my destination research and planning.”
Use for: before you research anything — clarity at Step 1 makes everything that follows faster and more specific
📌 Step 2 — Build: An Itinerary Around How You Actually Travel
“Here is my trip profile: [paste the summary paragraph from Step 1]. Based on this, I’m considering [destination or two or three options]. Please: (1) Confirm whether this destination is a good match for my trip profile — or suggest a better alternative if it isn’t, (2) Build a day-by-day itinerary for [number] days that is specifically designed around my pace and priorities rather than a standard tourist itinerary, (3) Flag anything that needs advance booking and how far in advance, (4) Suggest the best neighborhood or area to stay based on my profile, (5) Give me the two or three things that will make this specific trip feel exactly right for us.”
Use for: building the itinerary — paste your trip profile from Step 1 as the foundation
📌 Step 3 — Prepare: Arrive Ready, Not Hoping
“I’m leaving for [destination] in [timeframe] and I want to make sure I’ve covered everything in the preparation layer. Here is my trip profile and itinerary: [paste or summarize]. Please give me: (1) A packing list specific to this destination, this time of year, and our activities — not a generic list, (2) The three most important things to know before I arrive that most visitors find out the hard way, (3) Getting from [arrival point] to [accommodation] — the best option for travelers like us, (4) A simple what-if reference — the first step for the three most likely disruptions on a trip like this, (5) Anything I should do or book in the next two weeks before I leave.”
Use for: two weeks before departure — the preparation layer that makes arrival smooth
